Based on data from the Global E-Waste Monitor, the amount of electronic waste generated worldwide in 2019 reached a staggering 53.6 million tons, equivalent to 7.3 kilograms per capita. Projections indicate that this figure is set to rise further, reaching an estimated 74.7 million tons by 2030. Additionally, studies reveal that approximately 1.8 million metric tons of e-waste is exported annually.

A study by Uswitch highlights the concerning trend of e-waste production, particularly in the UK, which ranks as the second-largest contributor globally. With an average of 23.9 kilograms of e-waste per capita, the UK’s contribution has doubled since 2019.

In response to this growing issue, regulations such as the Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) system have been implemented. Under these regulations, companies generating more than five tons of e-waste are mandated to participate in a Producer Compliance Scheme (PCS). These companies bear the responsibility of e-waste recycling by collecting and disposing of electronic waste at approved Authorised Treatment Facilities (AATFs).

The law stipulates specific guidelines for the handling of electronic waste by businesses, distinguishing between small and large electronic devices:

  1. Businesses are obligated to accept WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) irrespective of the brand or method of purchase.
  2. Businesses must accept WEEE that serves the same purpose as the new product being purchased. For example, if a consumer buys a new toaster, the business must collect the old one.
  3. Businesses must offer these collection services free of charge, excluding transportation costs.
  4. Businesses are required to maintain comprehensive records, documenting the collection and disposal of e-waste, ensuring transparency and accountability in the process.

As part of our commitment to environmental responsibility, we are registered as a Waste Carrier with the Environment Agency and certified for WEEE refurbishment. Our secure data destruction process is certified to ISO 2700, providing assurance of data security. Additionally, we are registered with the ICO.

We accept a wide range of electrical equipment, including computers and most IT related devices.  Whether items are in working condition, repairable, or considered waste, we ensure that all equipment is checked for data-bearing items, which are then securely wiped or physically destroyed in our data destruction unit. Our goal is to extend the useful life of donated items through refurbishment and reuse, thereby reducing electronic waste and promoting sustainability.

We offer organisations in and around Sheffield a free collection and disposal service, particularly for loads of significant items such as laptops, PCs, and servers. Our collections include a duty of care waste transfer note for your records, ensuring compliance with waste disposal regulations.

We understand that organisations may have specific requirements for their audit trail, including asset registers for data bearing items and records of data destruction. We are happy to discuss these needs and tailor our services accordingly.

While we strive to recycle and refurbish as much electrical equipment as possible, there are certain items we cannot accept due to specialist handling and decommissioning requirements. The list below gives examples.

  • Reusing surplus equipment is not only environmentally friendly but also helps reduce electronic waste and its associated environmental impact.
  • Volunteers and placements involved in the refurbishment process gain valuable work experience and training, empowering them to secure future employment opportunities.
  • Refurbished PCs are installed with genuine Microsoft software obtained under the Microsoft Authorised Refurbisher programme, ensuring quality and reliability.

Whatever equipment cannot be refurbished is responsibly recycled, ensuring that valuable resources are recovered and reused, and hazardous materials are disposed of safely.
